Learn how to recreate Effie Trinket's colorful makeup in this Halloween Makeup Tutorial

Inspired by the colorful characters from this year’s Hunger Games- I decided to share a DIY Halloween makeup tutorial based on the Capitol’s own, Effie Trinket! Those of you who have read the books or seen the movies know that this out of touch fashionista loves wearing colorful wigs and wild makeup. Here’s your how-to guide to recreate her look.

1. Prep the skin with a primer (Makeup Forever HD Primer)

2. Apply a porcelain foundation all over the face and use a purple eyelid primer from the lash line to the brow extending outward across the temples (M.A.C. NC 15/ Maybelline 24hr Color Tattoo in Painted Purple)

3. Dust a purple/lavender shadow on top of the lid and under the cheekbones to contour (M.A.C. Parfait Amour)

4. Blend a magenta shadow onto temples and up toward the brow bone avoiding the lid itself (M.A.C. Vibrant Grape)

5. Pull the same magenta shadow underneath the lower lashes

6. Add a thin black liner to top lashline before applying clusters of false lashes (Kat Von D tattoo liner/ Ardell lashes)

7. Line the lower waterline with a white pencil and add mascara to top and bottom lashes (Smashbox Eye Beam Brightener/ Maybelline Lash Blast)

8. After covering the lips with foundation, use a lavender cream concealer to paint the lips slightly smaller than their natural shape. To get the blue outline I used an angle brush and a blue shadow on the edges of the concealer (Makeup Forever Camouflage Palette/ M.A.C. Winkle)

Add a wig and a colorful flower and you’re ready to go!

If you want to try one of Effie’s other colorful looks, just…

1. Add hot pink to the upper lid starting at the inner and following along the brow (shown below). To get a really vibrant color I chose to use a MAC Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in ‘More to Love’

2. Use the same pink liner to again draw the lips just slightly smaller than their natural size

3. Add the craziest false lashes you can find!

Change up your accessories and voila! Look number two!

See my take on this classic Halloween look inspired by our World Series Champions!...

Well, they’ve done it again! Our hometown heroes, the San Francisco Giants, have once again captured the title of World Series Champions!!! In honor of their exciting win, I thought I would share my SF inspired ‘Dia de los Muertos’ makeup.

The beauty of this Halloween classic is…. there are no rules! You can make this look your own by playing with the details. Start with a foundation several shades lighter than your natural skin tone. Add orange shadow in a large circle around each eye focusing the darker orange shade on and around the lid, then blending outward with the lighter shade (colors listed below). Define cheeks with the same orange shadow blending diagonally from the ear toward the corner of the mouth. Get Creative using a fine tipped brush and black cream liner to outline each eye, to define the black tip of the nose, to heavily line the eyelids, and to add as many other details as you want (ie: tear drops, dots, swirls, etc.) Finish with mascara or add false lashes for an even more dramatic look. Rather than painting a traditional web across the forehead, I added an upside down Golden Gate Bridge. For the mouth, I mimicked the stitching on a baseball using an angle brush and red lipstick (NARS Red Lizard).

Products include: M.A.C. eyeshadows in Red Brick and Rule, M.A.C. fluidline in Blacktrack, and M.A.C. brush #210

Hope you enjoy this Bay Area twist on a fun Halloween look. Leave a comment and let me know what you think (or if you’ve tried a version of your own)! GO GIANTS!!!

When I was approached about doing a wedding makeup story for Refinery 29, I couldn’t have been more excited! Their site is one of my go-to’s for the latest and greatest in the fashion and beauty world. We decided the story would feature makeup tips for the DIY bride and yours truly would be the ‘model’! [insert anxiety attack here]. Though I’ve done wedding makeup for more brides than I can count, I am infinitely more comfortable behind the scenes than in front of the…gulp… camera.

I decided to put my nerves aside and embrace the opportunity. And I am so glad I did. The shoot was a blast and provided me with a new perspective on the wedding day beauty experience (not to mention a new respect for models while I desperately tried not to blink as the shutter clicked). I am so happy with the finished story. I should have known I had nothing to worry about in the talented hands of photographer Molly DeCoudreaux and editor Katie Hintz-Zambrano.

I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed sharing some tips and tricks to help you look radiant and feel confident on your wedding day. Looking forward to many more tutorials to come!

Happy Wedding Season!
